Who am I?
My name is Grant Zouch and I am a PhD candidate at the Victoria University of Wellington School of Education. Between 2004 and 2017 I was a primary school teacher. While this job saw me take on roles such as team leader, unit manager, acting principal, and board of trustees staff representative, my most rewarding role was undoubtedly that of a classroom teacher. What ultimately motivated me to leave the profession and undertake postgraduate study was a stress-related heart attack.
Prior to becoming a teacher I embarked on the proverbial “O.E.” (twice), living in Australia, South Korea, the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. Previously I have worked for the Korean Embassy and the Canadian High Commission in Wellington, and the New Zealand High Commission in London. These days I live in Masterton with my wife and two furry friends.
The focus of my doctoral thesis is teacher attrition. I have a particular interest in the stories of former primary school teachers and how their experiences contributed to their decision to leave the classroom. In addition to my project, I perform research fellow tasks for the VUW Faculty of Education and work as a technical editor for the New Zealand Annual Review of Education.
